Living and dwelling in the Salzland district is changing – for the better! You can see this in the participation of the district’s four administrative centres in the IBA (International Building Conference for Urban Reconstruction) in Saxony-Anhalt in 2010. Topics such as demographic development and its consequences are being dealt with as future potential and development opportunities – with increasing success. Aschersleben, for example, will focus on its city centre, refurbishing historic buildings and relocating important facilities such as schools and public authorities from the periphery to the centre. This will further raise the city's profile following the presentation of exquisite garden landscapes in the 2010 State Gardening Exhibition in 2010. Bernburg, meanwhile, is tackling unemployment and demographic shifts with education and cultural policies jointly formulated by citizens, politicians and business. Schönebeck on the Elbe is on track to become the ‘Green city on the blue river’, by landscaping wastelands, encouraging allotment gardens and introducing traffic-calming measures. Finally there’s Stassfurt, which was forced to introduce changes due to large-scale mining subsidence in its historic centre. Consequently a new town lake with scenic banks was created, as well as a Learning and Memorial Centre, which provides information about the city's history and its role in the global potash industry.
