The Biotech-Campus in Gatersleben is a “green” biotechnology centre of global significance. With strict conditions and ambitious goals, companies and research institutions learn from nature while learning to protect nature as well, developing solutions which point the way forward. With the Genebank, Europe’s oldest and largest depository of plant genetic resources, the Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK) represent a unique collection, currently holding around 150,000 cultivated plant specimens. Some 180 scientists from 33 countries concentrate on key areas of IPK’s research such as utilisation of biodiversity to make agribusiness more environmentally-friendly and allow sustainable cultivation of renewable raw materials. Transgenic approaches aim at increasing yields and improving plants’ resistance to disease. This concentration of scientific skills was one of the key factors in the decision to establish Saaten-Union Resistenzlabor GmbH here, as well as the spin-off biotech companies TraitGenetics and SunGene, whose goals include greater vitamin enrichment of cultivated plants. The InnoPlanta e.V network, which also encompasses partners from the worlds of finance and politics, aims at exponentially increasing knowledge transfer and other synergy effects. The Green Gate Gatersleben (GGG) initiative is marketing this location and its skills to the outside world with the mission of giving new businesses ready access to established companies and scientific institutions in the area. Similarly, the Gatersleben biotech incubator takes care of business infrastructure for start-ups while the Grüne Vernunft e.V. (“Green Reason”) forum actively campaigns for awareness and objective debate on the subject of green genetic technology. And in the “Green Laboratory”, school projects help to encourage the next generation’s interest in science. Bernburg-Strenzfeld, meanwhile, is home to excellent horticultural operations and seed specialists such as APZ Anhaltische Pflanzenzucht GmbH. Now that’s what you call fertile breeding ground!
