Crystallisation | ||
Fixed molecular structures, natural lattices, shining surfaces – these are the characteristics of crystals such as sugar and salt, both products from the region. Our salt is a high-quality natural product from local deposits and essential for both human beings and industry. Networking and partnerships between business, politics, education and culture in the region form our ‘crystal lattice’: strong, mature and rich in highlights. Salt extraction has a rich tradition and has long been a constant in the region: in 1912 extraction work began at the Bernburg and Gröna mines, and in the following year sought-after potash salts were first extracted and processed. Extraction of rock salt from the Bernburg deposit – an abundant and especially pure source – began in 1921. Salt company esco GmbH & Co. KG today has a production capacity of around three million tonnes a year. In addition, the resulting caverns provide ideal conditions for secure underground storage of natural and liquid gases. Further processing of the salt is conducted by companies such as Bernburg’s Solvay Chemicals GmbH, one of the world market leaders which produces soda, sodium carbonate and hydrogen peroxide. |
