FROM HIGH CULTURE TO HIGH TECHNOLOGY | ||
Günther Tengg moved from Mozart’s Salzburg to the science city of Magdeburg ten years ago. As managing shareholder of IFR Engineering GmbH, he runs a mechanical engineering company concentrating on precision technology. And naturally the “Otto City” offers him a great deal in the way of sophisticated culture. If you ask Günther Tengg what inspired him to take on the responsibility of a company in Magdeburg, his razor-sharp reply comes without hesitation. The reasons, he says, are the excellent opportunities afforded investors and developers, the warm welcome from local and state authorities and, above all, a well-developed environment with a long tradition of science and mechanical engineering. Here he has managed to establish a company that provides an intelligent product range for industrial customers – from individual and production components to complex precision systems. Naturally he could have stayed in Salzburg, where the decision-making structures are more tightly controlled, mobility more restricted. But like any true entrepreneur, Günther Tengg loves new horizons, the pioneer spirit and a desire for change – all of which he’s found in Saxony-Anhalt’s capital. When he and his wife moved from the northern edge of the Alps to the flatlands of Magdeburg’s Börde, swapping the one-time seat of prince-bishops on the Salzach for the fabled royal domain on the Elbe. He was also fascinated by Magdeburg’s intellectual infrastructure, marked by renowned institutions like Otto-von-Guericke University, the Max Planck Institute and the Fraunhofer Institute. A down-to-earth business and industrial environment has emerged in Magdeburg, aided by a tradition of mechanical engineering which spans over 100 years, all of which is beneficial to young enterprises. In Magdeburg, the next generation of qualified workers includes people like Carsten Gärtner. He completed his studies in a dual system which gave him a grounding in theory while also exposing him to the working environment. Magdeburg should be proud of itself, says Günther Tengg of his chosen home town, where the Austrian feels warmly accepted. Thanks to Telemann, Magdeburg can also boast a rich musical history. And a home next to the Herrenkrug Park means excellent quality of life, even for a former resident of beautiful like Salzburg. Günther Tengg and his wife feel at home in both cities. |
