Mechanic, inventor and industrialist. Schäffer & Co. Mechanische Werkstatt (“mechanical workshop”) was his first workshop in Magdeburg. It was here that he developed the membrane pressure gauge, receiving a Prussian patent in 1849. Schäffer was one of Germany’s pioneers in mechanical engineering. In 1852, he set up the company Schäffer & Budenberg, establishing subsidiaries in the USA and in numerous European countries.
