There are good reasons why the region is on track to becoming one of the most important transport, logistics and distribution junctions in the former East Germany. Thanks to its outstanding geographical location, Magdeburg offers optimal mobility factors. Not only is it located at the heart of the trans-European traffic and transport network and on the main artery of East-West freight movements, but is also a major junction within the Germany-wide Deutsche Bahn rail network. Major European traffic routes leading to numerous destinations route through the A14 and A2 highways. And with its industrial port, canal and Hansa Harbour, the state capital is home to Eastern Germany’s largest inland port, with the further benefit of being located on Europe’s largest waterway intersection. Together with its Elbe-Havel Canal and the Hohenwarthe weir installation, there is access to the shipping routes from the Rhine and North Sea via Berlin to the Rivers Oder and Moldau, thus offering logistics companies and other businesses requiring port or harbour facilities excellent conditions that no other city in the former East Germany can match.
Our major industrial and business areas either offer direct access to highways, railways or ports, or lie just a few kilometres (1 to 15 km) from all important transport routes. The airports in Berlin, Hanover and Leipzig/Halle can all be reached in around 60 minutes. In times of increasing transport costs, this impressive infrastructure really makes the Magdeburg region stand out as an investment location.
