It was once the favoured domain of German Emperor Otto the First. Later it became a centre of the Reformation, was completely destroyed in the Thirty Years’ War, built up again to form a Prussian stronghold, became a large city during the industrial revolution, was destroyed again toward the end of World War II and then rebuilt once more. A lot can happen in 1,200 years and all of these events and phases in Magdeburg’s history are evident in the city. Cathedral City, Royal City, River Elbe City, Diocese, industrial centre, state capital, university city … and cultural centre. It’s a city that offers something for everyone. Museum and gallery lovers can enjoy an unusually rich range of art, culture and science - in the Cultural History Museum (which presents the history of the city and region), in the the Museum of Technology and the Natural History Museum. A selection of 20th century sculptures can be found at the Kloster Unser Lieben Frauen Museum of Art, and the Otto-von-Guericke Museum in the Lukasklause presents the life and work of Magdeburg’s famous mayor. Music and theatre enthusiasts can choose between excellent operas, ballet and theatre both contemporary and classical. Our city’s alternative theatre groups have a knack for picking out highly unusual performance locations, including old villas, historical trams and the Möllenvogteigarten. If you like baroque music, we highly recommend the Telemann musical performances in the concert hall of the Kloster Unser Lieben Frauen, one Sunday a month.
