Engineer and entrepreneur. Genest studied at Berlin’s Industrial Academy for Mechanical Engineering from 1869 to 1873 and at just 21 secured a responsible public service position as an engineer on the Prussian railways. Together with merchant Wilhelm Mix he established the company Mix & Genest OHG, Telegraph Construction Facility and Telegraph Wire Factory in Berlin, on 1 October 1879. By 1904 the firm had grown to 2,200 employees.
