Salty resources

The Zielitz potash works run by K+S KALI GmbH is one of the largest potash works in the world. Every year up to 12 million tonnes of crude salt is extracted and processed to become fertiliser or industrial products. The deposits formed around 250 million years ago. K+S disposal facilities here include an underground depository where waste requiring long-term monitoring can be disposed of.
